New Report Documents ‘Decade of Progress’ on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equality in America

As the decade draws to a close, a new report shows the past 10 years have been a period of dramatic gains in equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in America. Two-thirds of the 36 statistical indicators compiled in A Decade of Progress on LGBT Rights showed significant advances, including sharp increases in the number of LGBT Americans protected by nondiscrimination and family recognition legislation at the state level.  Just over a quarter of the indicators were negative, and two showed mixed results. The report is a joint project of the LGBT Movement Advancement Project and the Evelyn & Walter Haas, Jr., Fund.

African-American LGBT Organizations Join GLAAD in Protest of Buju Banton’s Grammy Nomination

Gay Men of African Descent (GMAD) and the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) announced today that they stand with the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) in its petition drive and advocacy work protesting the recent Grammy nomination of reggae singer Buju Banton’s album “Rasta Got Soul.” Banton has a long history of advocating the killing of gay people.

Human Rights Campaign Applauds Selection of John Pérez as California Speaker of the House

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, applauded today’s selection of Assemblyman John A. Pérez (D-Los Angeles) as the next Speaker of the House in the California State Assembly.  Pérez, who served this year as the Democratic Caucus Chairman, is the first openly gay man to hold the state assembly’s top leadership position.  The selection makes Pérez the first openly gay state Speaker of the House in the country.

Point Foundation Opens 2010 Application Season and Announces New Named Scholarships

Point Foundation (Point), the nation's largest scholarship-granting organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students of merit, announces the opening of its 2010 application season starting December 11, 2009. Students who will be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs for the 2010-11 school year are eligible to apply for the prestigious, multi-year scholarships. The application deadline for this year's scholarships is February 12, 2010.

GLAAD Launches Online Petition for Recording Academy to Reject Buju Banton for a Grammy

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the nation’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy and anti-defamation organization, today called on community members and allies to contact the Recording Academy and sign an online petition protesting the recent Grammy nomination of reggae singer Buju Banton’s album “Rasta Got Soul,” and urging Recording Academy members to not support his nomination.
