After President Obama declared his intention to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy that prohibits gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military this year, the Pentagon initiated a working group to determine how to implement the repeal. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates noted in his testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee earlier this year that, “the question before us is not whether the military prepares to make this change, but how we best prepare for it.” In keeping with this goal, members in both the House and Senate have moved forward with legislation to repeal this discriminatory law. With just one week until National Veterans Lobby Day on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" – sponsored by Servicemembers United and the Human Rights Campaign on May 10th and 11th – more than 300 gay and lesbian veterans and their straight veteran allies from across the country have already registered to come to Washington, DC to tell Congress to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law this year. This is expected to be the largest lobbying event on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” to date. The announcement comes on the heels of last week’s letter from Defense Secretary Robert Gates urging Congress not to move forward on repeal until the Pentagon Working Group's implementation study has been completed.
