Kalamazoo Votes for Fair Employment

Today the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, congratulated Kalamazoo voters in their decision to uphold  Ordinance 1856, a measure that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. The ordinance won by a margin of 62 to 38.

Maine Families Denied Protections in Marriage Vote

Today the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, expressed profound sadness and anger at the passage of Question 1 in Maine. Question 1 was a referendum vetoing the state’s law recognizing same-sex marriages. Also in last night’s election results, voters in Washington are headed for approval of Referendum 71, an initiative to approve the state’s domestic partnership law. And in New York’s 23rd Congressional District, voters rejected the anti-gay extremist positions of Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman, instead electing Democrat Bill Owens.

Mexican Actress Lucia Mendez to Receive GLAAD Media Award in Mexico City for LGBT Advocacy Work

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the media advocacy and anti-defamation organization for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, will be honoring Lucía Méndez with a GLAAD Media Award for her work to raise visibility of LGBT youth suicide in Spanish-language media. This marks the first time GLAAD bestows an honor outside of the United States.

Out & About Tours Launches In LA On West Hollywood's Big Night: Halloween!

It was announced today by West Coast entrepreneur Jim Anzide that his Out & About Tours, the first and only bus tour that offers an in-depth yet entertaining look at LGBT history and its hotspots not found in your average LA travel guide, will make its entrance on the LGBT stage in West Hollywood on Halloween day.  Anzide said the tour, aimed at members of all communities 21 years of age and older, will run every Saturday and Sunday of each month from 1-4 p.m departing from the ONE Archives Gallery & Museum in West Hollywood. Tickets, available online at www.outandabout-tours.com, cost $75 per person and include two drink tickets (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and snacks throughout the tour.  Just as LGBT culture is celebrated during WeHo’s annual Halloween Carnival, Out & About tours embraces and examines that culture with a roving reporter’s approach.

Six Hotels Act As Collection Points for Blanket Drive and Provide Volunteers to Houston Food Bank

As part of Marriott International’s corporate-wide “ Spirit to Serve” global customer awareness week, six Houston-area Marriott hotels will act as collection points for the Star of Hope’s city-wide holiday blanket collection drive November 2-6 and provide kitchen volunteers to the Houston Food Bank on November 6.

President Barack Obama Takes Major Steps for People with HIV and AIDS
The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, praised President Barack Obama today for taking two major steps on behalf of people living with HIV and AIDS. First, he signed into law a bill extending the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act, reauthorizing for another four years the critical programs that have helped provide care for more than half a million low-income people living with HIV and AIDS. Second, he announced the final regulation reversing our nation’s prohibition on HIV-positive people entering the country for travel or immigration.

President Barack Obama Signs Hate Crimes Legislation Into Law

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, praised President Barack Obama today for signing the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act into law.  The new law gives the Justice Department the power to investigate and prosecute bias-motivated violence where the perpetrator has selected the victim because of the person's actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.  The legislation was added as a provision to the FY 2010 National Defense Authorization Act earlier this Summer.  For a comprehensive retrospective and historical overview of hate crimes advocacy visit: www.LoveConquersHate.org.

Justice For All Curriculum Expanded to Include Gender Identity in Lesson Plans

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, today expanded its Justice For All educational curriculum to cover issues addressing gender identity and expression.  The newest addition to the curriculum provides educators with three new lesson plans that will help them to engage their students in discussing gender identity and how gender identity discrimination affects people in education, employment, and family law.
