Gulf Coast braces for 'extreme' hurricane season

After a relatively calm hurricane season in 2009, the Texas Gulf Coast is bracing for what forecasters say could be one of the most active tropical seasons on record. The newly released predictions from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration project a 70 percent probability of up to seven major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5 with winds of at least 111 mph).

GetEQUAL, Missouri Advocates Launch National Campaign Demanding Rep. Ike Skelton (D-MO) Apologize for Homophobic “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Remarks

Today, GetEQUAL -- a direct action lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization -- and local Missouri LGBT rights organizations announced the launch of a national campaign demanding Representative Ike Skelton (D-MO) apologize for the homophobic remarks he made last week when speaking about the military’s discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law and immediately stop his effort to undercut the repeal of "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

The godmother of gay comedy, Kate Clinton, swings into Houston for a special concert with the Bayou City Performing Arts’ acclaimed Gay Men’s Chorus of Houston. This concert, part of Clinton’s Lady HaHa Tour, marks the legendary comedian’s sole Texas show in 2010.

State Department Announces New Standards for Passport Gender Changes

The Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – today praised the State Department for instituting a new policy, effective immediately, regarding gender change in passports, as well as Consular Reports of Birth Abroad.

Pentagon: Investigations and Discharges Under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Will Continue

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), a national, legal services and policy organization dedicated to ending "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT), responded today after a Pentagon spokesperson confirmed to the Denver Post that investigations and discharges of gay and lesbian service members will continue.  Cynthia Smith, a Pentagon spokesperson, said: "The law is still in effect, and if someone were to out themselves, we would have to begin the discharge process."

Fines Proposed Against Mormon Church for Prop 8 Campaign Finance Violations

The Human Rights Campaign today hailed a proposal by the California Fair Political Practices Committee (FPPC) that would fine The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) for failing to report all of its late non-monetary contributions in its efforts to pass Proposition 8 in California in 2008.
