New Poll Shows Overwhelming Support for “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Repeal

A new poll shows that 78 percent of Americans believe lesbians and gays should be able to serve openly in the military. The CNN/Opinion Research survey comes just two days before expected House and Senate action on a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal measure on the National Defense Authorization Bill.

White House and Pentagon Announce Support for DADT Repeal Amendment This Year

Servicemembers United, the nation's largest organization of gay and lesbian troops and veterans, commended the announcement today that the administration will now support an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act to repeal the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law this year. The proposed amendment would include a delayed implementation provision that would not allow repeal to take effect until the Pentagon's Comprehensive Review Working Group completed its nine-month implementation management study and until the President, the Secretary of Defense, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff certified that the military is ready to implement repeal smoothly.

Military Leaders Tell Congress Time Has Come To Repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’

On Monday, Congressman Patrick Murphy touted a strongly worded open letter in which a dozen retired military leaders told Congress and the White House that the time has come to overturn the “discriminatory and misguided” policy known as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” The signers of the letter stated that “it makes little sense” as our nation is in the midst of two wars to discharge thousands of highly trained soldiers willing to take a bullet for their country simply because of their sexual origination.

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network Continues Urgent Push for Repeal, Responds to American Legion

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), a national, legal services and policy organization dedicated to ending "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT), responded to anti-repeal voices, including letters sent to the Hill by the American Legion.  SLDN sent national action alerts to members and supporters this week asking they contact key Senators on the Armed Services Committee as we approach the markup of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2011.

Student Non-Discrimination Act of 2010 Introduced in U.S. Senate

The Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – today applauded the Senate introduction of the Student Non-Discrimination Act of 2010 (SNDA), which would prohibit discrimination against any public school student on the basis of actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. In addition, SNDA prevents discrimination against students because of the actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity of a person with whom that student associates or has associated. SNDA was introduced by Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., and has 22 co-sponsors. Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., introduced a nearly identical version of the Student Non-Discrimination Act (H.R. 4530) in January 2010.

Human Rights Campaign Reaffirms Call for End to Blood Ban for Gay and Bisexual Men

The Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – reaffirmed its call for an end to the ban on blood donations by men who have sex with men, upon news that a key committee will hold a hearing on the subject next month. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Advisory Committee on Blood Safety and Availability will meet on Thursday and Friday, June 10 and 11, 2010 to discuss the ban.

Human Rights Campaign Foundation to Host Life and Estate Planning Seminar for LGBT Community

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, will hold a free life and estate planning seminar on May 25, 2010, in Minneapolis, MN.  The seminar is part of a national effort to help protect LGBT relationships and educate individuals on various estate and financial planning issues including drafting of wills, durable power of attorney for health care and finances, living wills, domestic partnership, and the Pension Protection Act.  Local financial and estate planning professionals will also be available for questions and answers.  To learn more about this event, visit: www.hrc.org/twincities.

NBJC Encourages Congress to Pass ENDA Immediately

The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) released the following statement today following participation in a press conference earlier today demanding immediate action in both the House and Senate on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), a federal bill prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The press conference was part of a series of nationwide actions this week calling for a vote on ENDA.
