Supreme Court Rebukes Efforts of Anti-Equality Forces to Conceal Petition Signatures

Pride Houston

This multi-day celebration takes place in Houstons Montrose neighborhood on Friday, June 25 and Saturday, June 26. Beginning on Friday, we host the Fashion Show a display of LGBT designers and retailers. On Saturday, the streets of Montrose come alive for the Pride Festival, beginning at 1pm, followed by the Pride Parade at 9pm.

HRC Calls on the Republican National Committee to Reject Texas Republican Party Platform

The Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – today condemned the Texas State Republican Party for including anti-LGBT language in its 2010 State Party Platform. The language, which goes far beyond the usual conservative talking points on “traditional family values,” sinks to a new low of intolerance and hate. In an email to members and supporters nationwide, HRC is calling on RNC Chairman Michael Steele to publicly repudiate the anti-LGBT language in the State Party Platform.

Arcus Foundation Research on 21st Century Equal Rights and the Cross Section of the LGBT and African American Communities

Yesterday, the Arcus Foundation hosted a panel discussion at the Center for American Progress focused on fostering a more meaningful and strategic relationship between the LGBT and African American communities. Panelists included Cornell Belcher, Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, C. Nicole Mason, Rashad Robinson and Hilary O. Shelton; the panel was moderated by the Washington Post’s Jonathan Capehart.

Department of Labor Issues Family and Medical Leave Guidance Including Children of Same-Sex Couples

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – praised a Department of Labor interpretation of the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) that permits an employee to take FMLA leave for a child for whom he or she is acting as a parent, even if the employee does not have a legal or biological relationship to that the child.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit passes Gender Identity Protections

Transgender Education Network of Texas applauds the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) board's unanimous decision to add Gender Identity as a protected class in their nondiscrimination policy.  Sexual Orientation has been included in there EEO policy since 1995, and this step shows that they have the intention of protecting all of their employees.  Although the language in the policy is not as clear as TENT would like it to be, it is a step in the right direction.  Additionally, the board stated their commitment to clearly protect their employees based on Gender Identity and Expression.

Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle To Possibly Veto Civil Unions Bill

Department of Justice Interprets Federal Domestic Violence Law to Protect Lesbian and Gay Victims

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – praised the Department of Justice for issuing a legal opinion that clarifies that criminal provisions of the Violence Against Women Act cover crimes against victims of same-sex domestic violence.  The memorandum, which was produced by the Office of Legal Counsel, provides that criminal provisions related to domestic violence, stalking and protection order violations apply to conduct when the offender and victim are the same sex.

Theodore Olson Demonstrates Prop. 8’s Denial of Equal Protection Under the Law

The American Foundation for Equal Rights brought together Olson and David Boies, who notably faced-off in Bush v. Gore, to demonstrate that Prop. 8 violates Americans’ U.S. constitutional rights by creating separate classes of people with different laws for each, in conflict with the nation’s founding principles, including equal protection under the law.
