In response to President Museveni's signing of Uganda's "Anti-Homosexuality Bill," GetEQUAL -- a national grassroots social justice organization focused on winning full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Americans -- issued the following statement:
"Uganda has a long history of human rights abuses and governmental corruption, and the recent 'Anti-Homosexuality Bill' is simply the latest in a series of attempts to divert attention from those abuses. What's even more shameful is that American right-wing evangelicals like Scott Lively, Rick Warren, and Tony Perkins have traveled to Uganda, instigated hatred against the LGBTQ community there, spread lies in an effort to mislead Ugandans, helped government leaders cover up their own corruption, then reveled in the passage of a hate-filled and dangerous bill for LGBTQ Ugandans. Americans have no right whatsoever to export hatred in order to imprison and kill citizens of another country.
As we combat efforts in the U.S. by these same religious leaders to eradicate civil rights protections for all minority groups that have been built with blood, sweat, and tears over decades, we stand with our LGBTQ sisters and brothers in Uganda who will now face not only legally-sanctioned imprisonment but also the threat of mob violence. We will do everything in our power to eradicate support for these renegade religious figures even as our hearts break for the disastrous effect they are having in Uganda, Russia, Nigeria, and on our own American soil."
GetEQUAL is a national grassroots social justice organization whose mission is to empower the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community and allies to take bold action to demand full legal and social equality, and to hold accountable those who stand in the way.
