Santa Fe Begins Issuing Same-Sex Marriage Licenses

Mayor initiative and private lawsuit start process – hotels offer equality packages
With more than one dozen TAG approved hotels in a town that long ago integrated its gay citizens into every facet of city life, Santa Fe has long welcomed gay visitors. Santa Fe has one of the highest number of households headed by same sex partners per capita in the country and the City of Santa Fe proudly includes sexual orientation in its non-discrimination polices offering benefits to same-sex partners of city workers. Thus, it was only a matter of time before Santa Fe would be the next place in the U.S. to issue same sex marriage licenses.
In March of 2013 Santa Fe Mayor David Coss and Councilor Patti Bushee announced they were sponsoring a Resolution expressing support for gay marriage in New Mexico and encouraging county clerks to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. As a result, and after a District Court judge’s ruling declared gay marriage to be legal in New Mexico, the Santa Fe County clerk began issuing same sex marriage licenses at the end of August. Numerous gay marriages have followed and Santa Fe’s hotels have rolled out special ways for same sex couples to honeymoon, elope or plan a wedding celebration in one of the country’s most open-minded towns.
