On Friday, Oct. 8th at 6 p.m. New York City activists will hold a "Flash Mob: Homophobia Kills Die-In" at Grand Central Station Main Concourse to make the point that homophobia kills.
"The Die-In will connect the dots for people between our deaths and their homophobia. It's everywhere in our lives, our schools and even in the civil rights laws that are supposed to protect everyone from discrimination. Yet no one is talking about it," said Todd Fernandez, one of the organizers.
A banner drop will point to the 1964 Civil Rights Act (CRA) because that law is America's non-discrimination policy for everyone else, and the gay demand is growing for Congress to act now to include "sexual orientation and gender identity".
"The CRA said no to racism, and our inclusion will say no to homophobia," said Iana Di Borna. "That law told America to stop being racist, and 46 years later we have President Obama. It's way past time to do the same for us!"
The Homophobia Kills Die-IN will happen at rush hour (6 p.m.) at Grand Central Station on Friday. Sign up on the FB page, and just mingle around the Grand Concourse, until you hear a signal (whistle or claps), and then lay down quietly for a few moments as names of infants, teenagers and adults are read aloud -- each killed by homophobia.
The Flash Mob is part of a series of actions by The American Equality Bill (AEB) Project, which seeks to add SO+GI (sexual orientation and gender identity) to the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the laws that effectively made racism illegal.
"This bill will similarly make trans & homo phobia illegal," explained Mr. Fernandez, of the AEB Project. "By making it illegal to discriminate against LGBT people, the government says: stop it or you'll be punished. This is how government reverses this mentality and each day lawmakers fail to act they are responsible for what happens, more dead children who were hated by someone or hated themselves because our laws and society have yet to say otherwise."
In related actions, the NY activists are holding a die-in every day at noon, outside of NY Senator Gillibrand's campaign office, as part of a daily vigil from 10 to 6 p.m. called the Queer SOS! to demand that she file a gay civil rights bill now.
"Come to the daily vigil at Gillibrand's campaign office, or to the Homophobia Kills Flash Mob at Grand Central Station," said Alan. "If we want to end homophobia, it's time for civil rights, and if we want civil rights, it's time for action!"
