Speech About Legalizing Guns on Campus Preceded by Gunfire on Campus

Austin, TX – Tonight University of Maryland senior research scientist John Lott, author of More Guns, Less Crime and The Bias Against Guns, will address University of Texas students in support of licensed concealed carry of handguns on college campuses.  However, the University of Texas campus was on lockdown earlier today while police searched for a possible second gunman connected to this morning’s campus shooting/suicide.

Today, students and faculty are displaced by a tragic incident that could have been much worse.  Daniel Crocker, Southwest regional director for Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, responded to the shooting: "It’s fortunate that the gunman took only his own life and injured nobody else, but students and faculty deserve options beyond relying on the altruism—or poor aim—of a madman."

As a result of the shooting, Lott will be speaking tonight at 6pm at Brave New Books (1904 Guadalupe Suite B Downstairs) instead of on the UT campus.  The speaking event is sponsored by Students for Concealed Carry on Campus at the University of Texas, a group affiliated with CampusReform.org

Texas colleges have been at the forefront of the debate over "campus carry" since two-thirds of the Texas Senate passed a 2009 bill to legalize licensed concealed carry on Texas college campuses.  Though half the members of the Texas House signed on as bill co-sponsors, the legislation was killed by an eleventh-hour filibuster of an unrelated bill.

CampusReform.org is the Leadership Institute’s comprehensive grassroots mobilization tool for liberty-loving student activists.  For more information about CampusReform.org, contact Bryan Bernys at or 703-247-2000.

Students for Concealed Carry on Campus is a national, non-partisan, grassroots organization comprising over 44,000 collegians, parents, and concerned citizens who believe that holders of concealed handgun licenses should enjoy the same measure of personal protection on college campuses that current laws allow them virtually everywhere else.  SCCC is dedicated to persuading state governments and school administrators to approve laws and campus policies that grant all citizens with concealed handgun licenses the right to carry their concealed handguns on college campuses.  SCCC is not affiliated with the NRA, a political party, or any other organization.
