GLAAD Calls on Media to Highlight Loving, Committed Couples Excluded from Marriage by Stay on Proposition 8 Ruling PDF Print E-mail
Aug 17, 2010 at 07:12 AM

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the nation's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy and anti-defamation organization responded to today's Ninth U.S. Court of Appeals decision which stays U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker's ruling that committed gay and lesbian couples have the constitutional right to marriage.

"During the trial, Judge Walker and the public heard first hand from same-sex couples about the harms Proposition 8 inflicts on so many California couples and families. It is their stories of courage and struggle that continues to build support for marriage equality," said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios. "We call on our nation's media to highlight stories of the hardships faced by California couples without equal protection under the law."

According to a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll released last week, 52% of Americans think gay and lesbian people "should have a constitutional right to get married and have their marriage recognized by law as valid." CNN's full press release on that poll is available here:
