OVER 8,000 SIGN PETITION URGING SENATE HELP COMMITTEE MEMBERS TO SUPPORT FULL GLBT EQUALITY AND ENDA PDF Print E-mail

PETITION ALSO SENT TO HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE AS HEARING ON EMPLOYMENT NON-DISCRIMINATION ACT NEARS

WASHINGTON, DC
– On Wednesday November 4th, the Standing on the Side of Love campaign gave the members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee a petition signed by over 8,000 Americans from every corner of the country urging support for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) of 2009. The petition calls on lawmakers to pursue legal equality for all gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Americans, including marriage and adoption rights as wells as protection against discrimination in military and civilian matters.

“Americans from every background—conservative states, liberal states, towns, cities, coasts, plains, and everything in between--embrace full equality for all people,”
said Meg Riley, Campaign Chair for Standing on the Side of Love. “More than 8,000 people have made a powerful statement to our lawmakers: there is never justification for discrimination and this principle must be reflected and protected in our laws,”

The petition delivery comes as the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee prepares to hold its first hearings on any form of the bill since 2002. It was also sent to the House Judiciary Committee, which is considering a separate version of ENDA. Signatures were gathered through Standing on the Side of Love as part of its campaign to fight discrimination in the United States through a broad and inclusive coalition.

Standing on the Side of Love is a campaign sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Association and promotes respect for the inherent worth and dignity of every person. We believe that no person of any immigrant status, race, religion, gender and sexual orientation, ability level, or political view should be dehumanized through acts of exclusion, oppression, or violence.
