Fabulous! The Story of Queer Cinema PDF Print E-mail
Reviews By Duane

Vito Russo's 1981 book The Celluloid Closet explored how movies portray gays and lesbians. That book led to a documentary adaptation from directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman. While both incarnations of The Celluloid Closet remain ground-breaking and essential, Fabulous! The Story of Queer Cinema focuses mostly on gay films, made from a gay or gay-friendly perspective.

Boys Life 4 PDF Print E-mail

The original Boys Life short film collection remains my favorite of the series, and the only one where all the collected films actually seem to belong with each other. Still, this anthology brings together four inventive tales.

(Spanish, with English subtitles.) Though this is a movie that captures the love and complications of family, it definitely isn't a family film. The R-rated version looks honestly and graphically at bear culture in Spain. The unrated version contains two additional, even more graphic, sex scenes.

Admittedly, the plot of this comedy/drama sounds shocking, irreverent, and unlikely, but Harry and Max delivers emotional insight and probing character studies.

Adapted from Scott Heim's 1996 novel, this sometimes dreamy, sometimes brutal, and often disturbing film engages the viewer in the lives of two boys. One boy responds to sexual abuse, and his attraction to his abuser, by becoming a hustler who fears showing emotion. The other boy hunts for the truth behind his lost time by clinging to UFO theories. As young men, they will eventually meet, for a beautiful ending to an often ugly story.

Adam & Steve gives a decidedly gay and decidedly irreverent twist to the romantic comedy. Obviously and defiantly mocking anti-gay cliches with the title, writer/director/star Craig Chester delivers an enjoyable tale of budding love.

In writing my West Texas fiction collection The Acorn Stories, I knew that West Texas offers more colorful characters than anyone could believe. I've met much stranger folks here than I ever created. I keep hearing the same about Sordid Lives when I watch it over and over with other West Texans.

Latter Days PDF Print E-mail

I wanted to see this movie from the first time I heard about it. Proving itself more than worth the wait, Latter Days easily ranks up there with gay favorites like Torch Song Trilogy, Sordid Lives, Jeffrey, Friends & Family, and Priscilla. It will doubtlessly make its way into countless DVD collections, and not just among gay viewers.
