GLAAD Responds to Recording Academy Statement on Buju Banton’s Grammy Nomination PDF Print E-mail

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the nation’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy and anti-defamation organization, today responded to a statement issued by the Recording Academy following GLAAD’s petition drive protesting the recent Grammy nomination of reggae singer Buju Banton’s album “Rasta Got Soul.”

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the nation’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy and anti-defamation organization, today called on community members and allies to contact the Recording Academy and sign an online petition protesting the recent Grammy nomination of reggae singer Buju Banton’s album “Rasta Got Soul,” and urging Recording Academy members to not support his nomination.

NBJC congratulates Simone Bell on her historic victory as she becomes the first Black lesbian state representative in the country. Ms. Bell won a runoff in yesterday’s Georgia election to represent District 58 covering the Atlanta area and will be the second openly LGBT member of the Georgia State House of Representatives, following Representative Karla Drenner. Atlanta voters also elected Alex Wan as the City Council’s first gay man, and first Asian American, on Tuesday.  Wan will represent City Council District 6.

In time to kick-off of the holiday shopping season, the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, today released a guide to hundreds of popular American brands rated on businesses’ treatment of LGBT employees. “Buying for Equality 2010” divides businesses and their consumer products into red, yellow and green categories based on their score on the HRC Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index, a nationally recognized benchmark of LGBT inclusion.
