Transgender Education Network of Texas Announces Organizational Change PDF Print E-mail

The board of Transgender Education Network of Texas (formerly TACT) is very proud to announce that it has hired it's first full time employee.  Lisa Scheps, one of the founders of the social justice organization, has been brought on board as Executive Director.  In the past, Transgender Education Network of Texas (TENT) has always relied on volunteers to handle its programs and operations; with the hiring of a full time Executive Director, they will be able to reach many more people around the state.

Environment Texas and Texas League of Conservation Voters Praise Austin City Council for Approving Subsidies for Yingli Solar Project PDF Print E-mail

Environment Texas, a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization, and The Texas League of Conservation Voters (TLCV), the state's leading environmental organization dedicated to electing pro-conservation candidates, today praised the Austin City Council for approving a package of incentives worth $354,000 to bring Yingli Solar, a Chinese solar company, to Austin. Yingli plans to build a plant in either Austin, Texas or Phoenix, Arizona, that would create 300 clean energy jobs by 2013.

Houston-Area Student Artists Named Young Masters PDF Print E-mail

Seven students from the Houston area are among the 22 student artists from cities across Texas who have been selected to be a part of the Young Masters program. Students were chosen for their exemplary artistic talent and will all receive financial help to pursue advanced study in their chosen field.

Grassroots Activists Gather to Repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” PDF Print E-mail

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-PA), alongside lesbian, gay and straight veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, held a press conference today in coordination with a swell of average Americans fighting for repealof “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell(DADT).  The event is timed with HRC’s annual spring Lobby Day where more than 300 members and supporters are expected to participate.

Santikos Theatres, the Texas based theatre circuit, is bringing the best in cinema technology to its 8 locations in San Antonio and Houston. All theatres will have digital projection within the coming months, offering guests superior picture and sound quality on 98 Santikos screens. Currently, the Silverado 19 IMAX, Palladium IMAX, Silverado 16 and Embassy 14 have converted all existing 35mm auditoriums to digital using Barco Digital Cinema projectors. The highest-ranking leaders of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines appeared before Congress this week and testified in support of the strategy to repeal the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law that was laid out by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.
