A new Washington Post-ABC News poll released today reveals yet again that a majority of Americans (53%) now favor marriage for gay and lesbian couples.

In the wake of new polling showing that Americans oppose the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), bills were filed in the House and Senate today to repeal DOMA and end federal discrimination against legally married same-sex couples.

Iowa House Moves Marriage Inequality Amendment Forward PDF Print E-mail

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights group, today criticized the Iowa House for passing an amendment to the state constitution that would prohibit any form of relationship recognition for same-sex couples. The amendment passed by a 62 to 37 vote and will now be sent to the Iowa Senate for consideration.

Hawaii State Senate Approves Civil Unions (SB 232) PDF Print E-mail

Hawaii State Senate passed SB 232 by a 19-6 vote.  The bill provides that the equal rights and responsibilities of married couples in Hawaii be available to thousands of same-sex couples in the state.  The Senate now sends a strong message that the time is now to lay this issue to rest.

I continue to be surprised at the persistence of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand why Clinton came up with DADT and took the effort to slip it in, so-to-speak, after his valiant but failed attempt to repeal a complete ban. At least DADT gave gays an opportunity to put their lives on the line for the country that hates them. . . .
