New York State Senate "Embraces Discrimination" by Rejecting Marriage Equality, GMHC says PDF Print E-mail

New York, NY -- Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) expressed deep disappointment that the New York State Senate today failed to extend marriage benefits and protections to same-sex couples.   The Senate rejected the Marriage Equality Bill (S4401) by a vote of 38 to 24.  According to the Empire State Pride Agenda and the New York City Bar Association there are currently are 1,324 benefits and rights that are not afforded to same-sex couples under state law because they are unable to marry.

FBI Reports 11 Percent Increase in Victims of Hate Crimes Based on Sexual Orientation in 2008 PDF Print E-mail

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, responded today to the Federal Bureau of Investigation report which showed the number of victims of bias-motivated crimes based on sexual orientation increased by 11 percent in 2008. The statistics show that reported hate crimes against the LGBT community have increased for the third year in a row. Hate crimes based on sexual orientation remain the third most common type of hate crimes, behind race and religion.

Human Rights Campaign Responds to Misleading Claims by Organizations Seeking to Discriminate PDF Print E-mail

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, today responded to the “Manhattan Declaration” produced and released by 145 evangelical, Roman Catholic and Orthodox Christian leaders indicating that they will not cooperate with laws that conflict with their beliefs, including those recognizing same-sex couples. The document also references the federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) as a threat to religious liberty.  Yet ENDA – which prohibits workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity – broadly exempts religious organizations.  The declaration also argues that religious groups that receive public funds to perform social services are unfairly burdened by state and local laws on marriage equality and non-discrimination.

As people become increasingly aware of the environment and how the choices they make impact it, there is also a trend toward becoming more “green” or environmentally friendly. This is especially true when holding an event or party, because there are usually so many people involved, and if not done in a green way, an event has the potential to produce a large amount of trash and to use up a lot of resources. The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, praised the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee today for holding the Senate’s first-ever hearing on a version of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act that includes both sexual orientation and gender identity.  The lead sponsors of the measure are Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Susan Collins (R-ME).

On Wednesday November 4th, the Standing on the Side of Love campaign gave the members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee a petition signed by over 8,000 Americans from every corner of the country urging support for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) of 2009. The petition calls on lawmakers to pursue legal equality for all gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Americans, including marriage and adoption rights as wells as protection against discrimination in military and civilian matters.
