Over 300 Veterans to Lobby Congress Next Week on Repealing DADT This Year PDF Print E-mail

With just one week until National Veterans Lobby Day on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" – sponsored by Servicemembers United and the Human Rights Campaign on May 10th and 11th – more than 300 gay and lesbian veterans and their straight veteran allies from across the country have already registered to come to Washington, DC to tell Congress to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law this year. This is expected to be the largest lobbying event on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” to date. The announcement comes on the heels of last week’s letter from Defense Secretary Robert Gates urging Congress not to move forward on repeal until the Pentagon Working Group's implementation study has been completed.

Soulforce Concludes Equality Ride 2010, Helping Advance LGBTQ Policy Changes at Universities PDF Print E-mail

Soulforce, a national non-profit organization dedicated to nonviolently confronting and ending anti-LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) discrimination, concluded its 4th annual Equality Ride on April 23. Twenty-five members of Soulforce Q, the organization's young adult program, visited 15 university campuses on a 50-day tour to advance changes in policies and practices that discriminate against LGBTQ students and faculty.

In a hearing as part of the landmark federal trial over California's Proposition 8, U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker scheduled closing arguments for June 16th. The trial in the Perry v. Schwarzenegger case began this past January.

Servicemembers United and the Human Rights Campaign announced expanded plans for a national Veterans Lobby Day to be held on May 10-11, 2010 in Washington, DC, as Congress begins to focus on the defense authorization bill – the likely vehicle for “Don’t Ask, Don’ Tell” repeal. The lobby day, which will bring hundreds of gay and lesbian veterans and their straight veteran allies from around the nation to Capitol Hill, is expected to be the largest lobbying event on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” to date.

After four years of collaboration by parents, educators and administrators to make their schools supportive and inclusive of all families, the Berkeley, California School Board voted unanimously last month to adopt the Human Rights Campaign’s “Welcoming Schools Guide” as official district curriculum. With strong leadership from the Our Family Coalition and many committed principals, teachers, parents, school board members, union representatives and district administrators throughout Berkeley Unified, this represents another victory in the pursuit of fairness, full inclusion and equality for all families, including those with LGBT parents/guardians.
