HRC to Weekly Standard: Don’t Fundraise for Bigots PDF Print E-mail

The Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – is condemning the Weekly Standard for sending an email on behalf of one of their sponsors, the anti-gay organization “Public Advocate of the United States,” that called LGBT Americans “sexual deviants” and asked recipients to contribute financially to efforts aimed at defaming the Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA).

Chick-Fil-A Donated Nearly $2 Million To Anti-Gay Groups In 2009 PDF Print E-mail

Earlier this year, Chick-fil-A became embroiled in a controversy surrounding its donations to anti-gay groups. Though Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy denied having an “agenda against anyone,” an Equality Matters investigation discovered that Chick-fil-A donated more than $1 million to anti-gay causes between 2003 and 2008. Now, new IRS 990 forms reveal that the company donated nearly two million dollars to anti-gay groups in 2009 alone, the most recent year for which public records are available.

Tennessee Governor Signs Bill Promoting Discrimination Into Law PDF Print E-mail

In an apparent attempt to score cheap political points, Tenn. Governor Bill Haslam has ignored the business community and signed into law a bill that wipes out county and city anti-discrimination laws, despite the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry reversing their earlier support and now opposing the bill.

LBGT Groups Urge Orbitz to Pull Ads from Fox News Over Anti-Gay Rhetoric PDF Print E-mail

Media Matters kicked off its DropFox campaign today by urging Orbitz (OWW), an online travel site, to pull its ads from the anti-LBGT Fox News network. Three high-profile gay rights organizations—GLAAD, Courage Campaign and Equality Matters—signed the letter to Orbitz CEO Barney Harford asking that the company no longer support Fox News through ad revenue.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the nation's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy and anti-defamation organization, today joined the state chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Oklahoma Democratic Party and the Oklahoma chapter of the Council of American-Islamic Relations in calling for the resignation of Oklahoma State Representative Sally Kern in light of her history of attacks on LGBT Americans and her suggestions on Wednesday that African Americans and women don't 'work as hard,' while speaking on the floor of the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

U.S. Taxpayers Spending $520 Per Hour Defending Discrimination PDF Print E-mail

In order to defend discrimination by any means necessary, House Republican leaders have contracted with the law firm King & Spalding at the rate of $520 an hour to argue that they’re right to deny recognition to legally married couples, according to the contract made public today.  The document caps the cost at $500,000 but can easily be increased upon further negotiations with the firm.

“The firm of King & Spalding has brought a shameful stain on its reputation in arguing for discrimination against loving, married couples,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese.  “No amount of taxpayer money they rake in will mitigate this blemish on the King & Spalding name.”

Today, more than 30 organizations sent a letter to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Julius Genachowski, urging him to swiftly act on the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) and the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation's (GLAAD) complaint against Liberman Broadcasting and KRCA Los Angeles for broadcasting the program, José Luis Sin Censura.
