West Side Story, The Modern Day retelling of Romeo & Juliet is probably one of the greatest stage musicals ever written.  It is additionally a very important lesson about our negative opinions of people who are different than we are and the consequences these opinions can have.

The Wizard of Oz blows into Fort Worth and It's A Disaster! PDF Print E-mail

I was looking forward to the stage recreation of one of the greatest movies of all time “The Wizard of Oz”.  The promotional material promised a show “presented with breathtaking special effects that will sweep the audience away”  Well much of the audience did sweep away, as group after group headed for the exit throughout the first act of a production suffering from unsurmountable sound problems.

For the first time ever North Texas' two best regional theaters have partnered to bring forth a production that will run in both Fort Worth and Dallas.  The partnering of such powerhouses as Casa Manana and the Dallas Theater Center was sure to bring a powerful production to life.

Patti LuPone Proves she is 'Fireball Of Talent and a Musical Force to be Reckoned With' PDF Print E-mail

That is how she is described in Gary Brumbough's mini bio of LuPone on IMDB and is he ever spot on. Patti LuPone is an amazing woman.  She has been nominated for  six Tony Awards,  winning two, Six Drama Desk Awards, winning three.  The show's she has headlined would makes anyone's list of the Best of Broadway, including Les Meserables, Sunset Boulevard, Sweeny Todd and of course the roles that earned her those Tony Awards Rose in Gypsy and Evita.

Dallas Symphony Season Opener is Brilliance! PDF Print E-mail

ImageJaap van Zweden and The Dallas Symphony Orchestra Premiered their new season this weekend and if it is any indication of the season to come, hold on.  This was the most incredible symphony I have ever attended.

I can only image the phone call when Theater Producer Margo Lions called John Waters and informed him she wanted to make one of his movies into a Broadway Musical.  Water's if you are not aware is the king of trash movies, his career started with such classics as “Hag in A Black Leather Jacket” and “Eat Your Makeup” and though he evolved over the years, I don't think anyone would consider Waters' mainstream.

9 to 5 The Musical Proves Movies Can Be Great Broadway PDF Print E-mail

More often than not when a hit movie is made into a musical, it is something just this side of tragic (Xanadu, High Fidelity)  but there are exceptions to that rule.  Hairspray and The Producers, are amazing musicals, and so is 9 to 5.

A lot has changed in sixty years and it is apparent in Dallas Summer Musicals' current production of Guys and Dolls.  One thing that has not changed what it takes to make great Broadway and Guys and Dolls is  great Broadway.
