GLSEN’s Day of Silence to Raise Awareness about Anti-LGBT Bullying at Thousands of Schools on Friday PDF Print E-mail

Hundreds of thousands of students at thousands of middle schools, high schools and colleges will participate in GLSEN's 15th annual Day of Silence on Friday by taking some form of a vow of silence to bring attention to anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) name-calling, bullying and harassment.

Fine juried art by 300 artists representing 17 media formats, including clay (decorative and functional), digital (not photography), drawing/pastel, fiber/textiles, furniture (functional), glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media 2-D, mixed media 3-D, painting (acrylic or oil), painting (watercolor), photography (digital or computer manipulated), photography (traditional), printmaking and sculpture (3-D). There are restaurants and wine cafes, an interactive children’s Capital One Bank Creative Zone and juried Emerging Artists sculpture installations by area high school students.

AFSP Partners with Johnson Family Foundation to Reduce LGBT Suicide PDF Print E-mail

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) has received a $45,000 grant from the Johnson Family Foundation (JFF) to develop a project aimed at reducing suicidal behavior and suicide risk among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons.

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, announced the launch of the second year of the “Generation Equality Scholarships” for LGBT and allied students who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the fight for queer equality.  The scholarships are part of HRC Foundation’s Youth and Campus Outreach Program, which aims to provide tools, facilitate connections and empower young people to fight for LGBT equality on campus and beyond.

Campus Pride (www.CampusPride.org) recognizes George Aumoithe, Jr. of Bowdoin College (Class of 2011) and Stephen Lucas from Pennsylvania State University (Class of 2010) with the 2010 National Voice & Action Leadership Award. The annual honorary recognition is the only one of its kind focused nationally on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and ally college students. Every year the award is bestowed upon young adults who have made extraordinary contributions as LGBT and ally leaders at colleges and universities across the United States.

National Progressive LGBT & Straight Ally Sorority Welcomes 9th Colony at Northern Arizona University PDF Print E-mail

A new colony ofGamma Rho Lambda (GRL) has been recognized at Northern Arizona University(NAU). GRL is the first national sorority with a focus on a social support system for college students in the LGBTA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and straight-ally) community. Colonies and chapters of GRL are rapidly spreading, now located in California, Arizona, Kansas, Indiana, and New York and will soon be recognized in Texas and Wisconsin.

GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, the Matthew Shepard Foundation and The Trevor Project – three organizations that work to improve the lives of LGBT youth – are among 100 finalists in Chase Community Giving, a campaign by Chase and Facebook to award $5 million to charities voted on by Facebook users.
