Gay Men 44 Times More Likely to Get HIV; Gay Men's Health Crisis Responds to Shocking New Data

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today released new statistics on incidence rates of HIV and syphilis among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). The data, which identified MSM as men who have engaged sexually with another man within the last five years, revealed that MSM are over 44 times more likely than other men to contract HIV, and over 40 times more likely than women to contract HIV. Further, MSM were over 46 times more likely to contract syphilis than other men, and over 71 times more likely than women to contract syphilis.

Coffee break: Compound brewing new research in colon, breast cancer

A compound in coffee has been found to be estrogenic in studies by Texas AgriLife Research scientists.

Though the studies have not been conducted to determine recommended consumption amounts, scientists say the compound, called trigonelline or "trig," may be a factor in estrogen-dependent breast cancer but beneficial against colon cancer development.

AMA Joins Efforts to Repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and Voices Concerns Over Same-Sex Marriage Bans

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, issued the following statement today on the American Medical Association’s (AMA) announcements regarding LGBT rights.  AMA members voted to join the effort to repeal the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy and declared that bans on same-sex marriage result in health disparities for LGBT couples and families.

OSU researcher receives recovery grant for national HIV/STD prevention work

An Oregon State University researcher has been awarded more than $2 million in grants to conduct HIV and STD-prevention research.

Peggy Dolcini, an associate professor in the Department of Public Health at OSU, has worked on HIV and STD-prevention research for more than 20 years.

President Barack Obama Takes Major Steps for People with HIV and AIDS
The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, praised President Barack Obama today for taking two major steps on behalf of people living with HIV and AIDS. First, he signed into law a bill extending the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act, reauthorizing for another four years the critical programs that have helped provide care for more than half a million low-income people living with HIV and AIDS. Second, he announced the final regulation reversing our nation’s prohibition on HIV-positive people entering the country for travel or immigration.
