The National AIDS Fund (NAF) announced today it is one of 11 organizations to receive the first-ever Social Innovation Fund (SIF) grants, an initiative administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The $3.6 million SIF grant will enable NAF to expand the scope of its Access to Care initiative in support of innovative public-private partnerships to improve individual health outcomes and strengthen local services systems, connecting economically and socially marginalized individuals living with HIV to high quality supportive services and health care. Breast cancer cells - even the most aggressive type - died after treatments with peach and plum extracts in lab tests at Texas AgriLife Research recently, and scientists say the results are deliciously promising. So how does a hush-hush subject like masturbation get a month of its own? It started in 1995 in San Francisco as a response to the forced resignation of U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders. After a speech at the United Nations World AIDS Day in 1994, an audience member asked Elders about masturbation’s potential for discouraging early sexual activity. On Sunday, March 21, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the health care reform bill by a 219-212 vote. The bill, which was approved by the Senate in December 2009, makes a giant leap forward in expanding access to health care for 32 million Americans, and constitutes the greatest expansion of federal health care guarantees since 1965 when Medicare was first enacted. This vote in the House of Representatives, after more than a year of heated debate, marks a huge victory for the American people, both those with insurance and those without. HealthHIV, one of the nation’s largest HIV non-profit organizations, is moving into the house previously occupied by MTV during the filming of “Real World DC.” The organization’s 20 person staff is leasing the historic, DuPont Circle property which played host to the cast and crew of the 23rd season of MTV’s reality show. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today released new statistics on incidence rates of HIV and syphilis among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). The data, which identified MSM as men who have engaged sexually with another man within the last five years, revealed that MSM are over 44 times more likely than other men to contract HIV, and over 40 times more likely than women to contract HIV.
