The former drummer of seventies disco group and gay iconic band
ABBA was found dead in at his home in Spain on Sunday. Sixty-two year-old
Ola Brunkert, who played with the band and performed on all of their albums, died in a freak accident after shattering a glass door when he fell into it.
The
Telegraph reports police arrived at Brunkert's home after a neighbor reported seeing the body of a man lying in the garden outside the villa on the Spanish island of Mallorca.
Brunkert had several lacerations to his neck and apparently died of blood loss from his wounds. An autopsy peformed on the body appeared to confirm the death was a result of an unusual tragic event.
"A glass door in the kitchen of the house was shattered and it appears that this man fell through the door. He then managed to get out into the garden where he died," a spokesperson from the Civil Guard told the press.
Brunkert apparently attempted to go for help after wrapping a towel around his neck, but collapsed and died in the garden.
ABBA, the pop quartet made up of
Agnetha Faltskog, Benny Andersson,
Bjorn Ulvaeus, and
Anni-Frid Lyngstad, gained much notoriety for their onslaught of sensational disco hits, and according to the bands website, Brunkert had helped make that success possible.
"I remember him as a good friend when we worked together in the mid-1970s. He was a very creative musician who contributed a lot when we toured and worked in the studio," Ulvaeus told
Expressen.
