| Luke Evans stars as Roger in latest Rent revival |
Rent is getting a redo for a whole new generation.
The revolutionary production that was hailed by
The
New York Times as the return of the musical is being reinvented yet again on the British stage.
Re-orchestrated and reworked by director
William Baker, who is probably best known for his long time collaboration with
Kylie Minogue as well as his work with
Bjork and
Spice Girl Gerri Halliwell, the updated version of
Rent promises to give a modern 21st century spin to the themes and sounds that broke musical convention a decade ago and challenged social mores with gay themes and an honest examination of HIV/AIDS.
Working with Baker in the musical renovation of Rent is music supervisor,
Steve Anderson, who has worked as a remixer with the likes of
Michael Jackson,
Janet Jackson,
Sting and
David Bowie. Like Baker, Anderson has also had a long-time collaboration with Kylie Minogue having served as the Musical Director of her 1997
Intimate & Live Tour in Australia.
Kylie fans rejoice – because me thinks all of this suggest that the spectacle and pop splash that have become Ms. Minogue’s signature are likely to be found in the latest incarnation of
Rent. Hoorah!
The cast of Rent-Remixed includes former
Sugababes member
Siobhan Donaghy as Mimi and hunky
Luke Evans, known to many for playing the lead role in
Boy George’s
Taboo, as Roger. Some might also remember Evans from Boy George’s fashion photography book
B-Rude.
Rent Remixed is currently playing at Duke of York’s Theatre in London, and is scheduled to run through April 5, 2008.
