Out actor
Nathan Lane has been cast as the President of the United States in
David
Mamet's
November, a new political comedy that touches on civil marriages, gambling casinos, lesbians, American Indians, presidential libraries, questionable pardons and campaign contributions.
The play, directed by
Joe Mantello, begins previews on December 20 at the Barrymore Theatre on Broadway and will open on January 17, 2008.
The first Mamet play to premiere on Broadway since
Speed-the-Plow, which starred
Ron Silver and
Madonna and was produced by Lincoln Center Theater at the Royale in 1988 November is said to chronicle the chaotic days preceding an election from the viewpoint of incumbent U.S. President Charles Smith (Lane).
Joining Lane in the five-character play will be
Laurie Metcalf of
Roseanne fame and
Dylan Baker whose credits include the indie cult hit
Happiness and the
Spider-Man movies, in which he plays Doctor Curt Connors.
Director Joe Mantello previously directed the Tony Award-winning 2005 revival of Mamet's
Glengarry Glen Ross and won a Tony for the presidential-themed musical
Assassins. He previously directed Lane in
The Odd Couple and
Love! Valour! Compassion!
