| Howard Wolfson |
Beginning on Wednesday, Howard Wolfson, Sen. Hillary Clinton’s tenacious communications director and top campaign strategist since her very first senate race, is headed to the Fox News Channel.
Wolfson joins former Clinton surrogate Lanny Davis and former Bush advisor, Karl Rove, on the network which was perceived by many of Clinton’s supporters to offer the most fair coverage of the former first lady’s 2008 campaign for the White House.
The move by Wolfson represents a significant win for the top-rated Fox News, which is home to cable news ratings winners like the O’Reilly Factor and On The Record with Greta.
“Howard was part of the inner working circle of Sen. Clinton’s campaign and has a unique perspective on just how unconventional this election year already is,” John Moody, Fox executive VP of news editorial, said in the announcement Tuesday.
“He has proven himself on key campaigns throughout the last decade and is recognized as one of the top communications and political thinkers in the Democratic Party. We look forward to benefiting from his insight during the general election campaign and beyond.”
Explaining his reasoning for joining the primarily conservative Fox News team, Wolfson told The Fix's Chris Cillizza that "Fox has the largest audience in cable television - many of its viewers are independents who will help decide the next election. It's critically important for strong progressives to be talking to and offering analysis to that audience."
"I thought that Fox's coverage during the primary was comprehensive and fair and evenhanded," Wolfson said in a separate statement.
One Fox commentator who is excited by the arrival of Wolfson at the network is Karl Rove, the man conservative talkers often refer to as ‘the architect.’
"The guy is very smart. [Wolfson] strikes me as a very able guy and surprisingly pleasant and amiable," Rove said.
Though CNN, took first place last quarter among the crucial 25- to 54-year-old wiewing demographic with its coverage of the presidential primaries, Fox rebounded to the top spot this quarter soundly beating its rivals.
