The National Enquirer reported that former presidential candidate Sen. John Edwards paid a night-long visit to his long-rumored mistress Rielle Hunter and their supposed love child at a Los Angeles hotel Monday.
In town for a press event with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on how to combat homelessness, Edwards, whose wife Elizabeth Edwards has been battling breast cancer, met with Hunter at the Beverly Hilton. Edwards reportedly arriving Monday evening and staying through until the wee hours of the morning, the tabloid reported.
Earlier this year, an article in the Enquirer claimed that Edwards had fathered a child with Hunter, which was promptly and vehemently denied by his camp and hers. The scandal spawned what the Enquirer has deemed a cover-up when Edwards’ good friend Andrew Young, a married man and father of three, staked claim as the father of Hunter’s baby.
But working off of a tip that Hunter had reserved two rooms for a secret meeting with Edwards, two of the paper’s senior reporters, Alan Butterfield and Alexander Hitchen, questioned a startled Edwards in a stairwell, after he’d been spotted visiting Hunter.
The reporters said that Edwards ran into a men’s room to avoid the barrage of questions, where he remained for about 15 minutes.
"After we confronted him about seeing Rielle, Edwards looked like a deer caught in headlights," Hitchen said. "He was clearly surprised that we had caught him at this very late hour inside the hotel."
