George McGovern and Hillary Clinton
Once a staunch Hillary Clinton supporter, on the heels of Tuesday’s narrow win in Indiana and huge loss in North Carolina for the Clinton camp, Sen. George McGovern called for the New York Senator to drop out of the race and let Sen. Barack Obama secure the nomination.

McGovern told the Washington Post that after watching the returns on Tuesday night, he found it virtually impossible for Clinton to win the nomination.

He said that despite remaining close friends with the Clintons, he has a call in to the former First Lady to tell her of his decision to change his endorsement.

"I will hold them in affection and admiration all of my days," he said of the Clintons.

Clinton is expected to travel to South Dakota tomorrow in anticipation of the state's June 3 primary, with 15 delegates at stake.

McGovern said he has no regrets endorsing Clinton but that, “by any practical test”, Obama has won the nomination.

"She has run a valiant campaign. And she will remain an influential voice in the American future," he said.

While McGovern acknowledges that Clinton herself needs to make the call as to when she’ll bow out, he said he feels now is the time to unite the Democratic Party, something easier said than done with two candidates vying for the nomination.
