It hasn’t been one of the greatest months to be a professional athlete. Following the violent shooting death of Redskin’s
Sean Taylor,
Jamaal Tinsley survived a gunfire attack outside an Indianapolis club. This weekend, Atlanta Hawks forward
Shelden Williams became another victim of athlete-targeted crime when he was car jacked at gunpoint before the game.
The 24-year old Williams graduated from Duke University where he set team and league records and became one of the highest NCAA scores of all time. He was drafted to the Hawks in 2006 and is just starting his career in the NBA.
Williams reported to police officers that he was held at gunpoint and his car was stolen outside of an Atlanta barbershop.
Late Saturday, Douglasville City Police apprehended the two suspects at Arbor Place Mall in Douglas County, near Atlanta. The suspects were in Williams' car and were attempting a robbery when they were arrested. One suspect was taken to the hospital for immediate care.
Williams was not hurt in the incident, but was visibly shaken when he showed up at the stadium after pre game warm up.
"I'm just glad that he's safe," Hawks coach
Mike Woodson told the
Atlanta Journal & Constitution about the frightening incident.
Hawks spokesman
Arthur Triche echoed the sentiment telling the
Journal, "In light of recent events going on around the country, we're thankful everything turned out the way it did.”
The Hawks triumphed in the game beating the Charlotte Bobcats 93-84.
