It started in 1991 as a small music gathering intended to reach underground music enthusiasts with performers like Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, and Siouxsie & the Banshees. Now, 17 years later, Lollapalooza has become one of the biggest and most lucrative music festivals in the world, and this week announced the incredible headliners for the 2008 event.

Created by Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell, the event was originally intended to be a farewell concert to his band. Over the year’s the touring festival welcomed a wide variety of indie rock performers, punk and grunge bands, and rap artists and became a notorious launching pad for several lesser-known musicians.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Breeders, Smashing Pumpkins, Sinéad O'Connor, Snoop Dogg and 30 Seconds to Mars are just a few of previous participants who have graced the festival’s stages.

Redesigned in 2003, Lollapalooza and now has become a weekend long destination festival in Chicago’s Grant Park.

This year the festivities will take place on August 1-3 and will feature over 90 bands, including Rage Against the Machine, Gnarls Barkley, Radiohead, Wilco and Kanye West.

Nine Inch Nails will also be returning to the line up that originator Ferrell refers to as "a gorgeous array of talent."
