Movie Hunks of August

Welcome to August—officially the second half of summer… the month movie critics and producers acknowledge as the dumping ground for all those Hollywood flicks that couldn’t cut it in June or July. And while, in years past, I might tend to agree, this year, the tides have shifted. August is chock full of movies that promise to pack the crowds into the theatre—and with this color palate of films come a slew of sexy stars you’re going to be lining up to gush over.

Five weekends—five men worthy of your $12, if for no better reason than the fact that they’re smoking hot. Thankfully, the five men in question also happen to be starring in movies worth seeing for other reasons.

Starting this weekend with part three of Matt Damon’s Bourne trilogy and wrapping up the month with Ryan Reynolds going gay as one of three characters he tackles in The Nines, there are plenty of reasons for you to be going to the theatre this month… and we’ve done the leg work, narrowing it down to five you can’t miss.

The Bourne Ultimatum ( Matt Damon) – The Bourne Identity was good. The Bourne Supremacy was great. And, by all accounts, The Bourne Ultimatum is superb. After Good Will Hunting, Matt Damon was hard pressed to find his footing as an actor. Sure, he excelled as the psycho-obsessed, maybe gay Tom Ripley in The Talented Mr. Ripley, but he also wasted his time (and ours) in boring fare like Bagger Vance and All the Pretty Horses. The Bourne series was an inspired choice. Every actor looking to secure his kid’s financial future looks for an action franchise with which he can align himself. Few find one so smart as this. Plus, when Matt does Bourne, you know he’s gonna bulk up, and Matt Damon never looks hotter than he does busting out of a tight fitting T.

Stardust ( Henry Cavill) – In case you missed Showtime’s The Tudors, Henry Cavill introduced himself to TV viewers in a big way when he damn near stole the show’s main source of sex appeal right out from under Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. Now he’s sharing the screen with big name folks including Claire Danes, Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert DeNiro in the fantasy adventure Stardust. Henry plays (but of course) a royal hottie batting off the affections of many a lady in waiting. We’re just hoping for a nude roll in the hay.

The Invasion ( Daniel Craig) – OK, so granted, the latest remake of Body Snatchers was supposed to come out last summer, which would typically make me question the film’s quality. But folks have been assured over and over and over that the cast was called in for reshoots because the initial shoot had some errors and they needed to make continuity corrections in the film. That could just be some Hollywood line, but given that Nicole Kidman is starring and considering how good Daniel Craig looked when he came out of the water in Casino Royale in that blue speedo, I’m willing to risk it. Aren’t you?

War ( Jason Statham) – Those of you who have enjoyed a Jason Statham film in the past know that you can expect two things. Tons of action and tons of sweaty, bulging muscles. That’s because all Jason really does is action, and he knows what his fans come looking for. In War, he squares off opposite Jet Li, a rouge assassin who killed Statham’s partner at the FBI. You know what comes next—and in typical action movie style, expect a break in the action for some hotel bedroom romp. Those were always my favorite when I was a kid.

The Nines ( Ryan Reynolds) – We’ve seen Ryan Reynolds do comedy. We’ve seen Ryan Reynolds do action. Horror? Check. Fantasy? Check. Drama? Check. In fact, about the only thing we haven’t seen Ryan Reynolds do is play gay (and he came close as the supportive son to lesbian Glenn Close in the 90’s TV drama Serving in Silence). That’s all about to change with The Nines, a film in which Ryan plays three roles—troubled actor, video game designer and openly gay TV producer. In the latter role, we’re told he has a pretty steamy shower scene. Screw the popcorn… I’m brining strawberries and a bucket of ice to this screening.
