| Dottie Pepper |
In the often-subdued world of golf, former American player
Dottie Pepper may be as controversial as they come. The two time Kraft Nabisco Champion was known for her outspokenness while playing, but the now retired sports commentator has opened her mouth again and a few simple words are causing some much-unneeded controversy.
Pepper was named All- American three times while attending college at Furman University. She joined the LPGA tour in 1988 and won 17 official events on the tour during her tenure. She also won the Solheim Cup six times while playing for the United States team.
The Solheim Cup is a biennial professional women’s golf tournament contested by teams representing Europe and the United States.
Pepper, who was always a source of discussion while she played on the team, now acts as a sports analyst for the Golf Channel. During her run on the tour she was known as “snottie Dottie” because of her forceful demeanor and “hot pepper” because of her trigger fire temper, but as a commentator she tends to keep her demeanor more reserved. That is until a few days ago when the American team had let their lead slip and Pepper called the team, “chokin’ freakin’ dog’s!”
Now in most sports the comment would be very mild, but in the golfing realm the comment is almost unheard of. According to press releases, the comment came when Pepper had mistakenly thought that the telecast had gone to commercial break, and she has apologized for the mistake.
Most of the American women’s team has yet to comment, but European captain
Helen Alfredsson has criticized. ??"I think it's totally inappropriate no matter what. " Game play will resume for the rest of the week. Let’s hope old Snottie Dottie returns to the air to keep some “spice” in the game.
