The season finale of American Idol is just around the corner, but some concerns have been developing about the health of last year’s winner. Last month, Jordin Sparks, who had been the opening act on the Alicia Keys tour, was forced to leave the show when one of her vocal cords began hemorrhaging.

The 18-year-old Idol has had a slow start on the music scene since winning the popular show last fall. Her album release date was pushed back, and her first single had a sluggish response. Her appearance on Idol this season singing her new song “No Air”, however, helped propel it up the charts.

Sparks signed on as the opening act of the Alicia Keys "As I Am tour", but late last month had to cancel show dates after she began suffering from an acute vocal cord hemorrhage. Doctors said the injury could be potentially career threatening and reports began to surface that the Idol’s road to musical fame could be ending before it had truly begun.

In a statement to MTV News, Sparks refuted the claims that she was no longer able to sing stating, “They were saying I would never sing again, and I knew I could because, well, it's my throat. My career COULD HAVE BEEN in jeopardy if I hadn't done anything about it. But I knew something was wrong and that I needed to get it checked out.”

For now the young songstress has been advised to keep quiet and let her voice heal. If healthy by then, Sparks is expected to return to the tour later this summer.
