Here’s the thing about the publishing industry—if you cash your advance check, you actually have to write the book. According to a spokesperson for HarperCollins, Victoria Gotti did not, yet she kept the $70,000 advance.
The daughter of late convicted mob boss John Gotti was supposed to deliver the book back in 2005. According to reports, that’s about the time she shifted her focus to her now cancelled reality series Growing Up Gotti.
The 45-year-old former columnist for the New York Post starred in the series about life with her three sons on the A&E network. HarperCollins filed its complaint in New York State Supreme Court Thursday claiming she never produced the book and two outlines were returned as “unacceptable.”
According to Bloomberg, a spokesperson for HarperCollins says both Gotti and her literary agent have been dodging calls from the publisher and the writer never signed a termination agreement.
A call to Gotti for comment went unreturned while her lawyer Matthew Dollinger told Bloomberg he knew nothing of a lawsuit and therefore could not comment.
Gotti is the author of several best-selling murder-mystery novels. Her late father, the convicted mob head of the Gambino organized crime family, died in federal prison while serving a life sentence after being convicted of racketeering and murder.
Her former husband, Carmine Agnello, was sentenced to nine years behind bars in 2001 for racketeering. The couple divorced in 2003.
