Thousands from across the state and across the nation will gather Sunday, September 16th in Dallas for the 24th annual 2007 Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade, as it starts its traditional procession down Cedar Springs at 2:00 p.m.
“The parade is actually the climax of an entire Pride Week, building up to the event and the festival following it,” said Michael Doughman, executive director of the Dallas Tavern Guild, which produces and coordinates of the annual parade. “A host of sensational activities across the area will lead up to the parade, including pride-related activities and events in member clubs each night of the week. Our theme this year for the entire collective celebration is ‘United for Equality.’”
Supporting Special Activities
The Kinsey Sicks (www.kinseysicks.com) will be in concert for one night only on Friday, September 14 at Dallas’ Lakewood Theater—with limited seating. The Dallas Voice will host Gay Day at Six Flags in Arlington Saturday, September 14 and Gay Bingo that evening at the Lakewood Theater, along with a special live broadcast of Derek & Romaine on OutQ Radio that will be broadcast from Cedar Springs that night.
The annual week of events commemorates the 1969 Stonewall riots, the modern birth of the movement for equal rights and liberation for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. The Stonewall riots occurred in June 1969 in response to harassment by the New York City Police. More than 100 cities around the United States hold annual Pride celebrations honoring the Stonewall riots.
The parade route begins on Cedar Springs Road at Wycliffe Avenue and will end at Lee Park, 3400 Turtle Creek Boulevard at the corner of Turtle Creek Boulevard and N Hall Street, where attendees will see a multitude of booths and displays from pride sponsors and community organizations.
