Vocal Contest to Follow Format Consistent with Popular Television Show

Pride Houston will kick off a series of vocal contests with Houston Pride Idol, an offshoot of the popular television show American Idol, to find Houston’s next singing superstar beginning April 14.

Making its Houston debut, Pride Idol will host live vocal performances on April 14 at the Pride Houston office to bring out the best musical talent in the gay community. Selected contestants will advance to the five qualifying rounds that will culminate with a semi-final and final round in June. Houston native and American Idol contestant Kimberly Caldwell will emcee the finals.

“Our first ever Houston Pride Idol event will spotlight the undiscovered and gifted vocalists within our gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered (GLBT) community,” said Eric Skains, co-chairman of Pride Houston’s events committee. “A non-amateur event, Pride Idol Houston’s judging panel will consist of local music professionals and special guests. Although Pride Houston is producing this event, we encourage those from all over Houston to come out and showcase their vocal talent,” he added.

The top three performers from each qualifying round will advance to the semi-finals with three ultimately making it to the final round. Song selections will be made by the contestant for the qualifying and semi-final rounds. The Pride Events Committee will select a song for each contestant during the final round.

Each qualifying round will begin at 10 p.m. at Guava Lamp, 570 Waugh Drive, on the following dates:

• Wednesday, April 18
• Thursday, May 3
• Thursday, May 17
• Thursday, May 31
• Thursday, June 14

Those who qualify will receive free drinks, up to a $50 value, for the evening and advance to the semi-final round on June 17th, 9 p.m. at Guava Lamp. The top three semi-finalists will perform live on the Main Stage at the Pride Houston Parade and Festival on June 23 at 5 p.m. The winner of Houston Pride Idol will receive a round-trip paid vacation to a Southwest Airlines destination. Second and third place winners will receive $200 and $100, respectively.

“We look forward to unveiling Houston’s next musical superstar who represents the GLBT community well,” said Skains.

Contestants can fill out an application at Guava Lamp, at the Pride Houston Office at 1415 California, or at www.myspace.com/houstonprideidol
