We watched him grow up from braces to beefcake and everything in between. He has been an inspiration, leading the Green Bay Packers to two super bowl appearances, and one world championship, and has appeared as the starting quarterback for them in every single game since 1992.
But just like all good things, this one too must come to an end. This week, nine time Pro Bowler quarterback
Brett Favre finally hangs up his cleats.
Favre has been one of the most prolific and popular quarterbacks of all time, not only because of his on field success, but for his easy going laid back public persona that has made him a fan favorite.
Favre started out with the Atlanta Falcons, and on his first pass as quarterback, suffered an interception that would eventually lead to his trade to Green Bay.
There he would prove himself on the field, winning the
Associated Press’ MVP award three times, with 275 consecutive starts at quarterback, the most career touchdown passes, the most career pass completions, and the most career passing yards.
He played the game with heart and entertained the fans with his risky play and was always the man to beat. It is that attitude that will be missed most as he steps away from the game. Favre has talked about retirement over the past few years, but this Monday the official word was made.
He reportedly informed coach
Mike McCarthy of his plans, and then made the announcement official when he expressed his wishes to general manager
Ted Thompson the next day.
"I know I can still play, but it's like I told my wife, I'm just tired mentally. I'm just tired," Favre relayed to ESPN's
Chris Mortensen in a voice-mail message.
Presumably,
Aaron Rodgers will taking over the position for next season, but out of respect to his mentor has refused to make an official announcement until after Favre’s press conference on Thursday.
