Susan G. Komen for the Cure recently unveiled a new advisory council for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
Along with the newly formed Young Women's National Advisory Council, the LGBT council joins four other Komen national advisory groups developed to help the organization address gaps in breast health and breast cancer research, education, treatment and screening pertaining to specific population groups.
Members of the new LGBT National Advisory Council include:
-
Mary Anne Adams, MSW, senior research associate/project manager, Emory University School of Medicine, Decatur, Ga.
-
Kathleen DeBold, BS, interim executive director, ServiceMembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), Washington, D.C.
-
Philip Deitch, MA, financial advisor, Ameriprise, St. Louis
-
Darlene DeManincor, PhD, professor, JFK University, Oakland, Calif.
-
Ann Fonfa, founder and president, Annie Appleseed Project, Delroy Beach, Fla.
-
Michelle "Mo" Malkin, JD, executive director, Verbena, Seattle
-
Rosalba Messina, president of Messina Consulting Group, New York
-
Anita Radix, MD, MPH, associate medical director, Callen Lorde Community Health Center, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Advisory council members are selected on the basis of written nominations. Advisory council members actively engage in helping Komen to plan strategies designed to decrease disparities in breast cancer mortality rates in specific population groups. Members serve on a voluntary basis for a period of three years.
"The combined experience and expertise of our priority-population council members enable Komen to wisely allocate resources to meet breast health and breast cancer needs in population groups that are chronically underserved,"
Susan Carter, Komen's senior advisor, office of the president and facilitator for the organization's advisory councils, said in a release.
