Howdy Cowboy! - Dallas offers eclectic spring calendar of activities

Dallas is never more diverse than in the spring. From billions of blooming blossoms at the Arboretum to the magnificent Deep Ellum Arts Festival, the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) traveler has a virtual smorgasbord of events to choose from.  

Here's just a sample of what Dallas is offer up for the spring season.  

Matisse: Painter as Sculptor, Jan. 21-April 29, Nasher Sculpture Center ( www.nashersculpturecenter.org) - In its first collaborative exhibition, the Nasher Sculpture Center and The Dallas Museum of Art will present concurrently Matisse: Painter as Sculptor. Co-organized also with the Baltimore Museum of Art, Matisse: Painter as Sculptor will be the first major exhibition of Matisse's sculpture organized in the United States in almost two decades.  

North Texas Irish Festival, Feb. 2-4, Fair Park ( www.ntif.org) - The largest music festival in Texas offers more than 47 different bands.  

Savor Dallas: An International Experience of Wine, Food, Spirits and the Arts, Mar. 9-10, Dallas Arts District ( www.savordallas.com) - Savor Dallas invites you to celebrate a weekend in Dallas with the best wine food, spirits and arts Big D has to offer.  

Dallas Blooms 2007, Mar. 10-April 15, Dallas Arboretum ( www.dallasarboretum.org/Events/Dallas_Blooms.htm) - Dallas Blooms is a celebration of spring at the Dallas Arboretum, which is arguably one of the top-five floral display gardens in North America. The 2007 festival theme is Flower Power, a salute to the 60s, and will include theme-inspired flower topiaries throughout the garden.  

Greenville Ave. Saint Patrick's Day Parade, Mar. 17, ( www.greenvilleavenue.org) - Get into the Irish spirit of Saint Patty's by cheering on the Greenville Ave. parade, which includes floats, tons of candy flying though the air and appearances by local celebrities.  

St. Patrick's Day Parade, Mar. 17, Dallas City Hall - this festive Irish parade starts at 2 p.m. in the Arts District and ends much later in the evening with bands, dancers and lots of kid activities.  

Mundo Maya Exhibit, Dallas World Aquarium ( www.dwazoo.com) - Mundo Maya is an eight-story, immersion exhibit that takes visitors from the waters of the Yucatan's gulf coast to the highland rainforests.  

AFI Dallas Film Festival, Mar. 22 - Apr. 1, Victory Park ( www.afidallas.com) - More than 150 films, including international, documentaries and shorts, will be shown on 53-foot-wide, high-definition outdoor screens at Victory Park as well as theaters around town.  

TGRA Big D Rodeo, Mar. 2-4, Fair Park ( www.tgra.org/cms_rodeos/index.html) - Cowboy up with spectacular athletes competing in events ranging from bronc and bull riding to roping, barrel racing, pole bending and much, much more Western action.  

Dallas Spring Home & Garden Show, Mar. 2-4, Dallas Market Hall ( www.texashomeandgarden.com/index.cfm?npageid=15) - Get your green thumb ready for this ultimate one-stop event for your home and garden.  

Plow, Plant and Shear, Mar. 31, 10 am to 4 pm, Dallas Heritage Village at Old City Park ( www.oldcitypark.org) - Visitors are invited to help prepare the 1861 living farmstead for the spring. Learn from costumed interpreters how and what crops were prepared, how to shear a sheep and the process of turning wool into a pair of mittens. Knitters, weavers, spinners, potters and blacksmiths will be demonstrating how pioneer crafts were created and used.  

Deep Ellum Arts Festival, Apr. 6-8, Deep Ellum ( www.meifestivals.com/deepspr.html) - This free street party features performances by bands, a juried arts show, world-cuisine vendors, and the Rock Art Show-with works by such legends as John Lennon and Bob Dylan.  

37th Annual USA Film Festival, Apr. 19-26, ( www.usafilmfestival.com) - Featuring the best new U.S. and foreign films, special tributes and retrospectives, the 28th Annual National Short Film & Video Competition, and more.
