If you ever fantasize about watching basketball players parade around in tight little short shorts, then this weekend would have been your opportunity. The Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics went head to head eighties style complete with spandex tights and heavy medal hair music, but unfortunately the Lakers just seemed to come up, well, short.
The Lakers went all out with the retro theme donning their tight eighties gear and even assistant coach Kurt Rambis put on his old Clark Kent glasses for the game, but the pregame hype fizzled quickly.
The Lakers may have been at the game, but their outfits were the only things that were getting the crowd excited. They made a season low of only 35% of their shots and ended their four game winning streak.
Superstar Kobe Bryant didn’t like the theme and felt that it took away from the game causing them to lose 110-91. "I don't know what it feels like to wear a thong, but I imagine it feels something like what we had on in the first half, he told reporters after the game. “ I felt violated. I felt naked. It's one thing to see films with guys wearing those things. ... I'd rather stay warm, man."
Celtics coach Doc Rivers seemed to agree suggesting that Boston’s decision just to wear regular playing shorts with vintage jersey’s could have made a small difference. "I think it played in our favor, the atmosphere, because they had to get it from somewhere, and maybe those shorts helped us, “ he told ESPN.
Rivers added, ”the one thing I know from this point on, our generation had better bodies than their generation, because they looked horrible in those shorts."
I guess fashion really can make the man, even in basketball.
