This weekend the Central Florida Softball League launched its season with a huge kick off party and talent show that brought 23 men and women’s teams out to celebrate their 10 year anniversary. From humble beginnings this league has thrived and excelled at bringing sports opportunities to the gay community for the last decade.
Founded in 1997, The Central Florida Softball League is a social and competitive outlet comprised primarily of members of the LGBT community, but welcomes everyone to participate with a variety of divisions to accommodations for most skill levels.
Currently comprising over 300 players in 5 divisions, the CFSL offers spring and fall Season play, and Outsports.com called it one of the “most successful gay-sports enterprises in Central Florida.”
Coming into their tenth year, the founders and participants are looking for the future and hoping to continue to grow and reach out to the gay community. Last month they began the celebration with a Sunday Fun Day where all players past and present got together to commemorate their time with the league and recruited new teams and participants for the upcoming season.
With the new schedule out for the fall season, the League is now preparing for their annual fundraiser the Orlando Meltdown Tournament which is slated to take place in January over MLK weekend. The tournament allows teams who participate to raise money for their favorite charities and offers a great way to give something back to the community. The tournament since its inception has raised and donated almost 50,000 dollars to a variety of worthy charities. 700 men and women of all ages are expected to participate in this year’s event.
